Our Story
Inherent Value began as a simple response to a profound need. One Thanksgiving, the overwhelming number of people experiencing homelessness in the community highlighted how many of our neighbors lacked not just food, but connection and care during moments that should feel warm and human. What started as a single holiday meal quickly grew into something larger. A small fundraiser provided more resources than expected, allowing for Christmas meals as well—revealing how accessible and impactful home-cooked, hand-delivered food could be.
With early support from the generous Okonkwo family, monthly meal deliveries became possible. Over the next several months, a dedicated group of recurring volunteers naturally emerged. These individuals shared a common belief: that every person deserves to feel seen, valued, and cared for. Together, this group formally established Inherent Value and secured 501(c)(3) status, laying the foundation for a sustainable, community-driven organization.
The model remained simple but meaningful—home-cooked meals prepared with intention, delivered on foot to people experiencing homelessness. The physical act of walking the routes reinforced the organization’s purpose: meeting people where they are, offering dignity and conversation along with food and necessities.
When life carried some members to new cities, the mission carried with them. The original Tampa team continued their work, while new efforts began in Philadelphia. Today, Inherent Value operates in both cities, offering meals several times a year—always ensuring that Thanksgiving and Christmas remain days of warmth, nourishment, and human connection. Along with meals, volunteers distribute blankets, gloves, hats, coats, and underwear, providing essentials that offer comfort and safety through colder months.
Inherent Value remains what it has always been: a collective effort to affirm that every person has inherent worth, and that simple acts of kindness—done consistently, humbly, and together—can strengthen a community.
